When a yard sits higher than the surrounding alley or street, the soil has nowhere to go but down. Over time, that slope erodes, the ground shifts, and the whole edge of the property starts looking rough. That's exactly the kind of problem a properly built retaining wall solves - and it's exactly what we tackled on this one.
We installed a Versa-Lok segmental retaining wall along the full length of this property's alley-facing side. Versa-Lok is a heavy-duty concrete block system built specifically for this kind of work. The blocks interlock and setback slightly with each course, which gives the wall its structural strength. It's not decorative block stacked up and hoped for the best - it's engineered to hold.
The grading behind the wall was part of the job too. Getting the slope right behind a retaining wall matters just as much as the wall itself. Poor drainage or bad backfill is one of the most common reasons walls fail early. We take that part seriously, because a wall that looks good for one season and buckles the next isn't a win for anyone.
What you end up with here is a clean, uniform wall that separates the yard from the alley, holds the soil in place, and honestly just makes the whole property look more put-together. The straw cover laid over the graded area behind it shows the ground is seeded and ready to establish - a small detail that reflects how we approach the finish of every job.
Retaining walls are one of those things that tend to get ignored until the problem gets bad. If you've got a slope that's creeping, a yard edge that's washing out, or a drop-off that just needs to be addressed, this is the kind of work that fixes it for good.
